The lazy days of summer are coming to an end. If you’re traveling out of town for one last hurrah, don’t forget to be diligent in protecting your home. According to the FBI, crime rates increase during the summer months. One simple reason for the crime rise could be because people let their guards down. In the heat of summer people are more likely to leave windows open in their homes and cars allowing easy visibility and access to their personal property. In the rush to get ready for vacation, home security is often forgotten. Other reasons for crime rising in the summer could include more teens and young adults having idle time while schools are on break- most burglars are under the age of 25.
Whatever the reason, the fact remains that crime does increase in the summer. While you’re preparing for vacation, be sure to take precaution to keep your home safe from potential burglars.
Tips to Keep Safe
There are several simple things you can do to protect your home while away:
- Ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your house. Let them know your travel plans, dates and how to get in touch with you in case of emergency.
- Stop mail and newspaper delivery.
- Be social media wise. Wait until you return home to post your vacation adventures and photos. Avoid “checking-in” or status updates like “Beach bound for the next 7 days” Turn of your location from appearing on your posts.
- Be sure all doors and windows are securely locked.
- Leave your blinds and curtains the way you normally keep them during the day.
- Make it look like someone is home. Leave a car parked in the driveway and stop your mail and newspaper delivery.
- Install motion sensor lights.
- Do not leave a key hidden outside.
- Consider a home security system. (and advertise it with a lawn or window signage)
- Unplug electronics susceptible to power surges like computers, TV’s and toasters.
